Library books, articles, videos and other materials may be placed on hold for a university course at Fondren Library. Course Reserve items have much shorter circulation periods for the duration of the semester. An electronic course reserve system called Ares facilitates electronic materials.

Policy Statement for Placing Materials on Library Reserve
Policy Rev. 01/2016
This policy has been established by the library, and reviewed by the Faculty Committee on the Library. Any special circumstances should be brought to the attention of the Access Services Manager.
- Readings for Rice University courses are placed on reserve at the request of the faculty member or instructor.
- Books and other materials to be placed on reserve should be submitted by July 25 for the fall semester and November 25 for the spring semester. This will ensure that materials will be available on reserve for the first day of classes. However materials may be added to Course Reserves at any time during the semester, as deemed necessary by the course instructor.
- Faculty will be notified before classes begin if an item is not available so other arrangements can be made.
- Materials received after 4 PM, or on a weekend will not be available for two working days.
- We cannot accept liability for personal items on reserve.
- All materials are removed from reserve the last day of the exam period unless a request to leave them on reserve is received prior to that date.
- Personal items must be picked up by January 5 after the fall semester, and June 1 after the spring semester. After the above dates, the library will discard the material. Reminders will be sent on the last day of classes.
